Nigerian police kill 9 suspected robbers
Lagos, Apr 14 (Xinhua/UNI) Nigerian police gunned down nine suspected members of a notorious armed robbery gang at Akilbu forest in a recent operation, along the busy northern Abuja-Kaduna expressway, an official said Sunday.
In a statement made available to Xinhua in Lagos, Frank Mba, the national police spokesperson, said the suspects were killed in an exchange of fire with the police on April 10, adding that two of the suspects managed to escape.
Mba said one policeman sustained gunshot wound and was presently receiving treatment in a hospital.
He said efforts were being intensified to arrest two members of the gang who escaped with gunshot wounds.
The West African country has recently witnessed an increase in armed robberies.
On April 8, seven people were killed following a robbery attack on a commercial bank in Ondo state in southwest Nigeria.
The development attracted a public outcry compelling the country's Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mohammed Adamu, to effect major changes in the command structure of the police.
On April 5, Adamu announced the deployment of police teams code-named "Puff Adder" to patrol the cities as part of measures to combat the growing crime.
