One Russian citizen was killed and six Russian citizens were injured with varying degrees of severity on Sunday in a speedboat crash off one of the islands near Thailand's resort province of Phuket, Russian Consul General in Phuket Vladimir Sosnov told Sputnik.

"The crash has happened this evening, quite recently. The boat hit the rocks off one of the islands closest to Phuket. One Russian citizen died, six other Russians and a captain of the boat received injuries of varying severity. There are minors among the injured," Sosnov said.

The consul added that the injured were taken to hospitals.

"The victims were taken from the crash site to Phuket, they are now in two hospitals on the island: Vajira Hospital Phuket and Bangkok Hospital Phuket. Diplomats from the Russian Consulate General have left to visit them," Sosnov added.

Later in the day, Sosnov said that it was a five-year-old girl who died in the incident.
