Over 140 people rescued, dozens missing after ferry fire in Indonesia: Reports

| @indiablooms | Aug 23, 2019, at 09:34 pm

Moscow, Aug 23 (Sputnik/UNI) Over 140 people have been rescued from the passenger vessel Santika Nusantara that caught fire near the Indonesian island of Java, with dozens more believed to be missing, media reported on Friday, citing the provincial Search and Rescue Agency.

The inferno hit the vessel on Thursday evening.

According to the Antara news agency, 143 passengers have already been rescued. The search and rescue operation, however, continues as more passengers are believed to have been on board, even though the vessel’s manifest says only about 111 passengers.

The causes of the fire have been so far unclear, but ferry accidents are common in Indonesia, with media blaming them on lack of stringent transport safety regulations.
