Pakistan raises concern over Sri Lankan burqa ban

| @indiablooms | Mar 16, 2021, at 11:11 pm

Islamabad: Days after Sri Lanka announced the plan to ban burqa wearing in public Pakistan has expressed concern over it and said the ban would further strengthen the apprehensions about the situation of minorities in Sri Lanka.

Saad Khattak, Pakistan’s High Commissioner to Sri Lanka, taking to Twitter said, “The likely ban on the niqab in Sri Lanka will only serve as injury to the feelings of ordinary Sri Lankan Muslims and Muslims across the globe.”

“It will further affect today’s economically difficult time due to the coronavirus pandemic and other image-related challenges faced by the country,” he added.

Importantly, earlier when the Sri Lankan government had allowed the burial of Sri Lankan Cobid-19 victims, Pakistan media termed the announcement as the result of Pakistan Prime Imran Khan’s Sri Lanka visit.

Besides the ban on the burqa, the government had also announced that it would close down thousands of unregistered madrasas in the country.
