Sri Lanka: Gunman opens fire at church ahead of Easter Bombing anniversary

| @indiablooms | Apr 19, 2025, at 06:06 pm

A gunman opened fire at a church located close to Manampitiya region in Sri Lanka on Friday.

According to reports, the gunman has been arrested.

The suspect, a 38-year-old resident of Main Road, Manampitiya, fled the scene after firing a shot that damaged a church window, reported Daily News.

Sri Lanka is currently on a high-alert to mark the sixth anniversary of the Easter Sunday bombing attack that occurred on 2019.

According to police investigations, the gunman approached the church gate, appeared to survey the area, then returned to the road and fired before escaping, the news paper reported.

Police arrested the suspect and seized the local gun from him.

Preliminary investigation suggests the shooting occurred due to a personal dispute between the gunman and the church's pastor.

An investigation is currently underway.

Suicide bombers in 2019 killed 279 people, including 45 foreigners, when they attacked three churches and three hotels in the Island Nation.
