Sultan Qaboos of Oman dies
Muscat/IBNS: Sultan Qaboos bin Said Al Said of Oman, who is the Arab world's longest-serving ruler, passed away on Friday.
He was 79.
“To the people of the beloved homeland in all its districts, to the Arab and Islamic nations and to the world at large. It is with hearts filled with faith in Allah and his Providence ,and with great sorrow and deep sadness— yet with complete satisfaction and absolute submission to the will of the Almighty Allah, that the Diwan of Royal Court mourns His Majesty Sultan Qaboos Bin Said, who passed away on Friday, the 14th of Jumada Al-Ula, the 10th of January 2020," Times of Oman quoted a Royal Court's statement.
The Diwan of the Royal Court declares an official mourning period of three days with the flag flown at half-mast for next forty days, reported the newspaper.
He was the Sultan of Oman since ousting his father, Said bin Taimur, in the 1970 Omani coup d'état.
The country was re-named Oman, and his leadership caused a rise in living standards and development in the country.

Indian PM Narendra Modi mourned the death of the leader and tweeted: " I am deeply saddened to learn about the passing away of His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said al Said. He was a visionary leader and statesman who transformed Oman into a modern and prosperous nation. He was a beacon of peace for our region and the world."
