Taiwan: 22 dies as passenger train derails in Yilan County

Taipei, Oct 21 (IBNS): At least 22 people died as a passengers train derailed in Taiwan's Yilan County on Sunday, media reports said.

The mishap left 170 injured.

Railway authorities say they are investigating the accident, which happened in Yilan County at about 16:50 local time (08:50 GMT) on Sunday, BBC reported.

The train was reportedly carrying 366 passengers at the time of the mishap.

Eight carriages of the train derailed when it was travelling between Taipei and the eastern county of Taitung.

Several people are still feared to be trapped under the debris.

The cause of the derailment is still not known.

The rescue operation was going on till the last report came in.
