US Awami League Vice President hopes Sheikh Hasina will return to Bangladesh as PM
US Awami League Vice President Dr Rabbi Alam has expressed confidence that Sheikh Hasina will return as Prime Minister of Bangladesh and thanked India for sheltering her after she fled the South Asian nation on August 5, 2024 following massive protests against her regime over a job quota issue.
He demanded the Bangladesh Interim government chief Muhammad Yunus to step down.
Yunus, a Nobel laureate, took charge of the current interim government just days after Hasina's ouster.
Alam told Indian news agency ANI: "We want to ask the Bangladesh Advisor to step down and go back to where he came from."
"Sheikh Hasina is coming back as the Prime Minister. The young generation has made a mistake, but that's not their fault; they have been manipulated," he said.
Court Directs Seizure Of Hasina’s Dhaka Residence
A Dhaka court has ordered the seizure of plots, houses and flats belonging to former PM Sheikh Hasina and her family members, adding more troubles for the family that played a major role in securing Bangladesh’s freedom from Pakistan in 1971.
The properties that have been ordered to be seized include Sheikh Hasina’s Dhanmondi residence, ‘Sudasadan’.
It is in the name of Hasina’s son Sajeeb Wazed Joy, and daughter, Saima Wazed Putul.
The court also ordered the seizure of 124 bank accounts belonging to Hasina, Joy, Saima Wazed Putul and former PM’s sister Sheikh Rehana.
Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Md Zakir Hossain issued the order following an application by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), its Public Relations Officer Akhtarul Islam confirmed to The Business Standard.
The assets ordered to be seized include a flat in Gulshan in the name of Tulip, whose deed value is Tk43 lakh, a 16-katha house in Dhanmondi belonging to Joy and Putul, valued at Tk3 crore, a parcel of land in Gazipur’s Kaliakair worth Tk8 and another in same place worth Tk3 lakh, alongside a flat in Segunbagicha worth Tk18 lakh, the Bangladeshi newspaper reported.
The order has been issued to seize six flats in the Gulshan area that are registered under the name of Radwan.
The court has also banned Hasina, Joy, Putul, Rehana, Radwan, Tulip, and Rehana’s other daughter Azmina Siddique, from travelling abroad.
However, all of them have already left Bangladesh.
Student Protest And Hasina’s Ouster
Bangladesh witnessed a massive demonstration last year triggered by students who revolted against ousted PM Sheikh Hasina over a job quota row.
The protests and resulting clashes led to over 600 deaths in the South Asian country, which is witnessing political turmoil.
Hasina, the longest-serving PM of the country, fled to India amid violent demonstrations on August 5, 2024, ending her tenure just months after she won the general polls and formed the government.
Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus has been leading an interim government since her ouster.
