'Ghar wapsi' held in Bengal, 150 tribals New Delhi, Jan 29 (ANI): Reactions poured in on Thursday as reports emerged that the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) allegedly re-converted over 100 tribals to Hinduism in West Bengal. Over a dozen adivasi Christian families - some 100 people, including children - reportedly attended the conversion programme. India needs 'predictable' tax regime, sa New Delhi, Jan 29 (ANI): India needs a 'simple, predictable and fair' tax regime to restore foreign investor confidence, said Minister of State for Finance Jayant Sinha on Thursday. On Wednesday, the Bombay High Court dismissed a tax notice amounting to Rs 3,200 crore sent against Vodafone, ruling that there is no taxable income on share premium received on the issue of shares. After the ruling, the Centre decided to not appeal against the judgement, however stressing that while many cases are currently sub-judice, every case has to be looked at differently. 29-Jan-2015

Kalyan Singh sworn in as Governor of Him Shimla, Jan 29 (ANI): The governor of Rajasthan, Kalyan Singh took additional charge as the governor of Himachal Pradesh. The Chief Justice of Himachal Pradesh High Court, Mansoor Ahmed Mir gave oath of office as the 26th governor of Himachal Pradesh. Speaking to media in Shimla's Raj Bhawan, he said that he is pleased to follow the orders of the President Pranab Mukherjee. He also said that he has an emotional bonding with the state of Himachal Pradesh and would discharge the duty as governor of the state. The President has earlier this month asked Rajasthan Governor Kalyan Singh to discharge the functions of the Governor of Himachal Pradesh, in addition to his own duties, till further orders. Foreign Secretary Dr S Jaishankar meets New Delhi, Jan 29 (ANI): Foreign Secretary Dr S Jaishankar met External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj in her office on Thursday. Earlier in the day, Dr S Jaishankar took charge as the new Foreign Secretary, replacing Sujatha Singh whose tenure has been curtailed by nearly seven months. The decision was taken last night by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. As per the order issued by the Department of Personnel and Training, Dr Jaishankar will have tenure of two years from the date he assumes charge. Swine flu claims 27 lives in Rajasthan Jaipur/Ludhiana, Jan 28 (ANI): The Rajasthan government is making necessary arrangements after 27 swine flu deaths were reported from the state. Additional director of health department, Doctor KC Meena, said that 113 cases of swine flu were reported from 22 districts. Meena said that symptoms of swine flu were very much similar to ordinary viral or cold due to which people tend to adopt a lax approach towards the disease, which leads to delay in treatment causing deaths. Bangladesh pro liberation forces protest Dhaka, Jan 28 (ANI): Members of Gonojagoron Moncho, a resurgent platform, held protests against the ongoing political violence in Bangladesh by certain political groups and its leaders. Hundreds of distinguished cultural and intellectual personalities, organisations came together to participate in the protest in Dhaka, condemning countrywide blockade called by opposition parties under former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia. Tamil newspaper receives terrorist threa New Delhi, Jan 28 (ANI): Weeks after 14 people died in an attack at satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo's office in Paris, a threat letter for a similar attack has been received in Tamil Nadu. Condemning reactions flowed on Wednesday after a Tamil daily, Dinamalar, received a letter: supposedly from terrorist outfit Al-Qaeda, reading "Yesterday Charlie Hebdo, tomorrow Dinamalar". Artists pay tribute to eminent cartoonis Moradabad, Jan 28 (ANI): In a tribute to the legendary cartoonist, RK Laxman, artists in Moradabad recreated his works. Laxman, whose "You Said It" cartoon featuring the 'Common Man' lampooned India's powerful for half a century, died on Monday aged 94. He had been ill for two weeks and died of multi-organ failure at a hospital in Pune where he lived. Around 20 artists came together and recreated the Common Man through their paintings as a tribute to the artist. An artist, Narendra, said the idea behind the event was to remember Laxman through his iconic cartoons.
