Nepal PM Sushil Koirala says earthquake Kathmandu, April 28 (ANI): Even as rescue operations in earthquake hit Nepal are in full swing, the country's Prime Minister Sushil Koirala on Tuesday told Reuters that death toll could reach 10,000. Koirala also ordered intensified rescue efforts and appealed for foreign supplies of tents and medicines. "The government is doing all it can for rescue and relief on a war footing. It is a challenge and a very difficult hour for Nepal,' he said. Meanwhile, people with earthquake-induced injuries continued to flow into Kathmandu's Bir Hospital as medical practitioners from Israel arrived to offer help. Doctors at Bir hospital have been working round-the-clock to treat the wounded and those in a critical condition, but support has been needed. A group of medical practitioners, including paramedics from Israel, took to the ground immediately after they arrived in Kathmandu and offered help to the doctors whose energy has been drained over the past three days. 28-Apr-2015

Afghanistan President Ghani pays homage New Delhi, April 28 (ANI): Visiting Afghanistan President Ashraf Ghani paid tribute to freedom fighter Mahatma Gandhi at his memorial in New Delhi on Tuesday (April 28). Ghani, who is on a three-day India tour, showered flower petals on Gandhi's memorial at Rajghat. He was accorded guard of honour at the presidential palace, Rashtrapati Bhawan, earlier in the presence of President Pranab Mukherjee and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Ghani also met PM Modi and held delegation level talks with Indian officials. PM Modi donates one month's salary for e New Delhi, April 28 (ANI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi donated one month's salary to the Prime Minister's National Relief Fund to help with relief work for those affected in the massive earthquake that hit Nepal and parts of India. The official twitter account of the Prime Minister's Office shared the information. "PM has donated one month's salary to the Prime Minister's National Relief Fund, for assistance to those affected by the recent earthquake," it said. Furthermore, Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Monday also wrote to Nepal Prime Minister Sushil Koirala, expressing her grief for the devastation caused by the massive earthquake that resulted in the death of thousands. Indian Air Force steps up rescue operati Kathmandu, April 28 (ANI): With the improvement in weather conditions, Indian Air Force has stepped up rescue operations in the earthquake hit Nepal. Working in coordination with Nepal Army, it rescued several injured people. A powerful earthquake struck the Himalayan kingdom with the 7.9 magnitude at midday on Saturday (April 25) followed by several aftershocks. The earthquake had its epicentre in Pokhra. Task Force Commander of Indian Air Force (IAF), Air commodore Suresh, said that the rescue team was trying to rescue as many people as possible. Everest survivor recounts terrifying mom Kathmandu, April 27 (ANI): Michael Churton, a documentary film maker from New York, considers himself lucky that he managed to survive the massive earthquake and avalanche at Mount Everest base camp where he was filming a documentary on the Everest ascent. Churton, 38, was with four other colleagues at the base camp at 17,500 feet ascent when the earthquake struck, sending tons of ice and snow down the mountain. At least 17 people were killed on Mount Everest in the earthquake-triggered avalanche. More than 60 people were injured. Mountain rescue teams, helped by clear weather, used helicopters on Monday to airlift climbers still stranded. An estimated 100 climbers and guides were safe but trapped at camps 1 and 2 by the earthquake which rendered the treacherous Khumbu icefalls leading up to them from base camp impassable. 27-Apr-2015
CJI writes to PM, says won't be part of New Delhi, April 27 (ANI): Supreme Court Chief Justice H L Dattu on Monday refused to be a part of a panel constituted to select two eminent persons as the National Judicial Appointments Commission (NJAC) members. The three-member panel was formed to select eminent persons in the six member NJAC. A constitution bench comprising five judges began hearing on the validity of the new law on appointment of judges to higher judiciary today. Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi said that Chief Justice Dattu has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi that he would not participate in the meeting of the panel till the matter is decided by the apex court. The three-member panel comprises Chief Justice of India, Prime Minister and the Leader of Opposition, who are authorised to select and appoint two eminent persons in the six-member NJAC for appointment of judges to higher judiciary. 27-Apr-2015

Saturday's earthquake in Nepal, which measured 7.9 on the Richter scale, resulted in the deaths of over 4000 people, while more than 50 were killed in India. Rajasthan CM calls high level meeting ov Jaipur, April 27 (ANI): Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje called a high level meeting at her residence in Jaipur as death toll due to a 7.9 magnitude earthquake in Nepal crossed 3000 mark. The chief minister instructed all concerned departments of the state government to help and evacuate all Rajasthanis safely from Nepal. Abiding by her instructions, a team of officials has departed to Nepal boarder with five Buses and are trying to evacuate Rajasthanis from the crisis hit nation. The rescue team will camp in Maharajganj and Gorakhpur and will work on the strategies to bring back the stranded people. Chennai students collect relief material Chennai, / Kathmandu, April 27 (ANI): To help bring relief to the thousands of affected people in Nepal, school students in Chennai city on Monday collected immediate requirements like medicines, blankets and food material from shopkeepers to send to the neighbouring country, reeling from one of the worst earthquakes in its history. A massive earthquake with 7.9 magnitude hit Nepal at midday on Saturday followed by 55 aftershocks. The calamity, one of the worst in over 81 years, killed over 3,600 people. Students of Fathima Matriculation Higher Secondary School observed two minutes silence in tribute to the departed souls, before they began their rally. Nepal Quake: Special prayers held in Var Varanasi, April 26 (ANI): Special Prayers were held in Varanasi on Sunday for the safety of people affected by the massive earthquake that hit Nepal twice. Fresh tremors were felt across Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal and Assam after an earthquake of 6.7 magnitude hit east of Kathmandu today. Meanwhile, the death toll due to the massive earthquake, with a magnitude of 7.8 on the Richter Scale, which hit Nepal yesterday has reached over 2000, while over 5000 have been reported to be injured. The Government has sent four NDRF teams to Nepal and is planning to deploy three more to aid rescue operations in the country. Evacuated Chinese tourists arrive back h Kunming, April 26 (ANI): Chinese tourists evacuated from Nepal after a 7.9 magnitude earthquake hit the country arrived back in China on Sunday morning, state media reported. A total of 230 Chinese tourists arrived in Kunming airport in China's Yunnan province. Another group of 93 Chinese tourists arrived at an airport in China's Guangzhou, among them were survivors of the strong quake. An injured Chinese tourist recalled what happened. Her husband also had minor injuries after a falling rock hit his head. An unidentified witness also recalled his experience. CCTV cited China's Civil Aviation Administration as saying that all flights to Nepal will be operating normally, and extra flights will be dispatched to pick up more trapped Chinese tourists. 26-Apr-2015
Major fire broke out at Kolkata's City M Kolkata, April 26 (ANI): A major fire broke out at a shopping mall in the New Market area of Kolkata city on Sunday. Around 15 fire tenders have been pressed into service to douse the flames at the City Mart shopping mall. Fire officials were seen working to try and douse the fire. The lovers, who eloped were brought to the village and were insulted in front of the entire village. The girl is a student of class XI, and the boy a primary school dropout. Their relatives managed to trace them. They were brought back to the village. A humiliating ceremony was organised and the couple was made to wear garlands made of cow-dung cakes.
