Youth wing of Congress protests urging g New Delhi, April 16 (ANI): The student and youth wings of Congress party staged a protest on Thursday outside Telecom Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad’s office in New Delhi urging the government to preserve internet neutrality. A group of India's leading technology and Internet firms has pulled out of Internet.org, Facebook's flagship effort to get billions more online, in a growing debate over free access and internet neutrality in the country. More than 100,000 users have petitioned the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) to prohibit telecom operators charging extra money from users and companies to open application faster, and slowing down the speeds for those who don't pay. Pro-Tamil group protests against sandalw Chennai, April 16 (ANI): Activists of a pro-Tamil group, Dravidar Viduthalai Katchi, took to streets in Chennai on Thursday (April 16) to protest against the recent encounter of 20 suspected sandalwood smugglers. The encounter was the biggest operation in years to stamp out smuggling in remote forests in Chittoor district of Andhra Pradesh early this month. Most of the suspected smugglers hailed from Tamil Nadu. The killings sparked tensions between Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, with the Andhra government saying the men from the neighbouring state were red sandalwood smugglers, while Tamil Nadu said they were innocent labourers. Although, the area remains tense as a demolition drive planned to create space for a mall parking lot became a major controversy this week, when 800 residents of the locality announced a mass conversion to Islam. They said the religious conversion to Islam was to save their homes from being demolished. According to the Valmiki community people, their homes were being demolished at the behest of a powerful politician. The move was said to have a strong backing of Samajwadi Party strongman Azam Khan. Chittoor Encounter Case: Hyderabad HC or Hyderabad, April 16 (ANI): Hyderabad High Court on Thursday ordered re-post mortem of the body of the deceased laborer Sashi Kumar in the Chittoor Encounter Case. Earlier this week, the Andhra Pradesh police had confirmed the encounter killing of at least 20 persons reportedly involved in the smuggling of Red Sanders trees. However, the National Human Rights Commission had issued notices to the chief secretary and the DGP of Andhra Pradesh, calling for an explanation for the act of the police and forest officials within two weeks. Indian government to move top court agai New Delhi, April 14 (ANI): India’s Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari has said that the central government would approach the top court against the National Green Tribunal (NGT) order of banning vehicles older than 15 years from running on New Delhi streets. On Monday, Gadkari held a meeting with Delhi-based transporters and said the government is equally concerned about pollution and needs three to six months to prepare the plan and have a policy. He added that 15 days were too short for the transporters as it will impact thousands of people who have bought trucks taking huge loan. India needs to do lot more to eradicate New Delhi, April 13 (ANI): Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh said on Monday (April 13) India has done a lot to eradicate untouchability but a lot more is to be done to treat everyone as equal. Singh was speaking at the inauguration of 'Untouchability no more', an event organised by social service organisation Sulabh International in New Delhi to commemorate the birth anniversary of Bhimrao Ambedkar. Ambedkar is referred to as the champion of the rights of India's disenfranchised, particularly its "lower" and "backward" castes, as well as Dalits, or what the rest of the world knows as "untouchables". Meanwhile, Singh also said India believes the whole world as one big family. At the event, Singh was garlanded and treated with sweets by women belonging to Scheduled Castes. Two students killed after school buildin Chennai, April 13 (ANI): Two girl students were killed while another was seriously injured after a wall of a government-aided school building collapsed in Chennai on Monday. The incident took place when the three girls were sitting near the wall and a portion caved in. Reportedly, both victims were eighth standard students.
