The FTC is looking into how a London-based consulting firm, Cambridge Analytica, mined personal data on over 50 million Facebook users while working for Donald Trump's presidential campaign. Cambridge Analytica suspended its CEO. Other internet giants, Google and Twitter, also face a backlash over allowing the spread of false information that might have swayed voters toward Trump. Twitter shares plunged. Google was slightly down.

NITI Aayog partners with Piramal Foundat

New Delhi: The NITI Aayog and Piramal Foundation entered into an agreement to work to transform 115 ‘aspirational Districts’ across the country in terms of healthcare, education and nutrition. They will work closely with the District Collectors and Key officers of these districts. Earlier this year, NITI Aayog ranked 115 aspirational districts selected by the Government on six socio-economic parameters, pertaining to health and nutrition, education, financial inclusion and skill development, agriculture and water resources and basic infrastructure. The government's think tank also highlighted multiple challenges across indicators that need to be disentangled, in order to transform these aspirational districts across India.

Amazon pushes to sell abroad

New Delhi: To compete with rival marketplaces run by eBay and Alibaba,   American electronic commerce and cloud computing company Amazon, is pushing merchants on its website to sell into other countries to better compete.  Amazon is encouraging merchants on its website to sell goods abroad to better compete with rival marketplaces run by eBay and Alibaba.  According to the company's executive, in 2017 sellers on Amazon made more than a quarter of their revenue from selling to other countries. That's up more than 50 percent from the previous year. Analysts estimate that it’s between $50 billion and $75 billion. "They recently launched their service in Australia and, to the extent that they could have a combination of first party and third party sales effort, they can, one help them have a robust offering, more robust offering from day one, meaning available, offer consumers in Australia a larger merchandise of goods. And, number two, it could improve their profitability from day one," said Senior Research Analyst, D.A. Davidson Companies Tom Forte. The cross-border sales increase outpaced Amazon’s 31 percent rise in overall net sales in 2017.

Congress protests inside Parliament over

New Delhi, Mar 23 (ANI): The Congress Party staged a protest in front of Mahatma Gandhi's statue inside the Parliament on Friday, demanding government file review petition against SC ruling on SC/ST Act. Many prominent leaders including Congress President Rahul Gandhi,  Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge among others. The party members raised slogans like, “SC/ ST ka adhikar vapas do”, “Daliton ke samman mein, Rahul Gandhi maidan mein”. With a view to prevent the misuse of provisions of Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act 1989 (SC/ST Act), the Supreme Court on Tuesday held that there is no absolute bar for granting anticipatory bail in a matter under the Act.

Anna Hazare goes on indefinite hunger st

New Delhi, Mar 23 (ANI): Anti-corruption crusader Anna Hazare  reached Raj Ghat and goes on an indefinite hunger strike against the Centre.  Hazare has been pressing for setting up of the Lokpal at the Centre and Lokayuktas in the states, besides implementation of the Swaminathan Commission report, which has suggested ways to address the agrarian distress. He has been accompanied with many supporters including social activists.  Hazare had earlier said that he would do Satyagraha till his last breath and accused the Central government of not allotting space. The venue of his protest will be the iconic Ramlila Maidan, where he had sat on a hunger strike in 2011 demanding constitution of a Lokpal to investigate cases of corruption.

Air India inaugurates its maiden flight

New Delhi, Mar 23 (ANI): Celebrations were held after Air India's maiden flight from Delhi to Tel Aviv was inaugurated in the wee hours of Friday, strengthening decades old ties between the two countries. The Delhi-Tel Aviv direct flight will help in giving a boost to tourism in both the countries, taking the relations between the countries to a new level. This is the first time that a flight will reach Saudi Arabia covering a shorter route in mere seven hours. Israel Tourism Minister Yariv Levin said, “It is truly a historic moment in the relations of India & Israel. We will see many more Indian tourists coming to Israel now.”

Elephant found dead in Ramnagar

Ramnagar (Uttarakhand), Mar 23 (ANI): After falling sick, an elephant died in Uttarakhand’s Ramnagar. Forest officials were rushed to the spot to treat the tusker after getting the information, but it died. According to forest official DK Singh, the deceased male tusker was injured after a fight with another elephant. It had wound near its tusk and after the fight, his body parts stopped functioning. Forest officials have sent the body of the elephant for post-mortem to know the cause of its death.

Bulandshahr (Uttar Pradesh), Mar 23 (ANI): A woman was inhumanly beaten up by her husband in public on a village panchayat’s diktat for eloping with another man in Uttar Pradesh’s Bulandshahr. The woman’s husband was arrested by the police after the video got viral on social media. Police have also lodged a complaint against 20 members of the panchayat in connection to the diktat. The video clip clearly shows a woman tied to a tree and repeatedly being hit with what appears to be a leather belt by a man.

Indonesia, Mar 23 (ANI): Thick clouds of toxic gas from Indonesian volcano hospitalised 30 people and prompted closure of the popular tourist and mining site. Nearly 200 people living on the slopes of Mount Ijen in East Java province were forced to evacuate. Miners dug hardening yellow sulfur from the crater to sell for use in everything from cosmetics to matchsticks. The volcano regularly puffs out small amounts of noxious gases but the site usually stays open to the public.

Amaravati (AP), Mar 23 (ANI): Telugu Desam Party (TDP) Spokesperson Lanka Dinakar on Thursday raised questions on the passage of Finance Bill.  “My strong point is that when the house is not in order, how the Finance Bill was passed?” the TDP Spokesperson questioned.  Asserting that the bill shouldn’t have been passed unless the house was in order, Dinakar said the Central Government is acting as per their whims and fancies, and with predetermined mind.  The TDP spokesperson also alleged that the Central Government is not ready to discuss the Andhra Pradesh’s bifurcation promise and implementation of fund released to the state. “With their (Central Government) predetermined mind, they were not there to participate in discussion regarding the AP bifurcation promise and implementation of fund release so far,” said Dinakar. The lower house was adjourned twice on Thursday. First, it was adjourned till 12 pm. When it convened again, the disruptions forced the speaker Sumitra Mahajan to adjourn the proceedings till tomorrow.

Hyderabad, Mar 23 (ANI): Daughter of a woman, who was forced to dance at a hotel and is currently stuck at the Indian embassy in Oman’s Muscat, sought help of Union External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj to bring her mother back. The victim was lured of a job as a salesgirl in Dubai by an agent.  After Dubai, she was sent to Muscat, where her employer would repeatedly beat her up. The victim somehow escaped from the hotel and is currently staying at the Indian embassy.  She doesn’t have her passport as her employer took it from her and is refusing to return it.  She went to Dubai in October 2017.

Naxal with bounty of Rs 10 Lakhs arreste

Giridih (Jharkhand), Mar 23 (ANI): A Naxal carrying bounty of Rs 10 Lakhs on his head, was arrested by the Jharkhand Police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF). One AK-47 rifle, live cartridges, four magazines and walkie talkie were recovered from the arrested Naxal identified as Nemchand Mahto. Mahto was wanted in many cases and police had been tracing him for long time.

Indirapuram (Uttar Pradesh), Mar 23 (ANI): Indian pacer Mohammad Shami on Thursday said that he was sure about being proven innocent, after he received a clean chit from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) in connection to match fixing charges leveled against him. “I was sure I would be proved innocent. I have always tried to give my 100 percent in the game and I will continue to do so,” said Shami. Last week, the Supreme Court-appointed Committee of Administrators (CoA) had written to the BCCI's Anti-Corruption Unit (ACU) head Neeraj Kumar to investigate the charges leveled against Shami by his wife.
