NEW Delhi: The Income Tax department has sent a notice to Election Commissioner Ashok Lavasa’s wife seeking details about the information provided by her in her ITR about holding directorship in around 10 companies.

According to sources, Novel Singhal Lavasa has been asked to furnish more details about her personal finances to know if her income has escaped tax assessment in the past or has hidden facts about her income from the department.

In a statement, Novel Lavasa said, "It is clarified that having served as a Class I officer with the State Bank of India for 28 years and having acquired vast experience in Banking and Development, I continue to be engaged in various professional activities, including as independent Director in a few companies.”

“I have replied to all IT notices received since 5th August 2019 and have been cooperating with the ongoing process of the Department,” she added.

The alleged tax evasion and holding directorship in multiple firms is related to the period between 2015-17.

Ashok Lavasa became Election Commissioner on January 23, 2018 post his retirement as Union Finance Secretary in 2017.

He had hit the headlines for airing his dissent about the alleged violation of model code of conduct (MCC) by the Prime Minister and some BJP leaders while Chief Election Commissioner Sunil Arora and Election Commissioner Sushil Chandra issued a clean chit on the matter during the general elections this year .
