Agartala/UNI: The budget carrier IndiGo has launched its maiden flight between Agartala and Aizawl on Saturday under low-cost regional connectivity scheme Ude Desh ka Aam Nagrik (UDAN).

The 78-seater ATR aircraft arrived here with 38 passengers from Aizawl and returned from Agartala with 48 passengers, Airport Authority of India (AAI) officials said.

Tripura Transport Minister Pranajit Singharoy flagged off the flight at 1350 hrs to Aizawl and said it would start from Aizawl everyday at 1230 hrs. The flight would start journey in the morning from Kolkata to Aizawl then to connect Agartala and in the evening it would reach to Kolkata via Aizawl.

With the launching of Agartala- Aizawl connectivity, total daily fleet here connecting all major cities of the country including Kolkata, Delhi, Bangaluru, Mumbai, Chennai and Hyderabad and direct flight to Guwahati, Imphal, and Aizawl would be 19 from Agartala.

The minister said few more flights would be added in the list soon after new terminal building of MBB airport would start.

Earlier, Air Deccan had started small aircraft in Kolkata-Agartala-Shillong route in 2018 but had to suspended service after a few months because of the shortage of passengers. From Guwahati all northeastern towns including Bagdogra have been brought in air connectivity.
