New Delhi, Nov 28 (IBNS) President Pranab Mukherjee on Friday condoled the passing away of leading historian Tapan Raychaudhuri.

In a condolence message to his wife, Pratima Raychaudhuri, the President said, “I am extremely saddened to learn about the passing away of Prof. Tapan Raychaudhuri.

"Prof. Raychaudhuri was one of India’s foremost economic and social historians, well known for his penetrating mind and deep insight into British Indian history, India's economic history and the history of Bengal. For his immense contribution towards the study of history, Prof. Raychaudhuri was honoured with the Padma Bhushan. His sad demise leaves a void which is difficult to fill. He will however stay alive in the fond memories of his family, friends, colleagues, students and countless admirers in India and abroad," he said.

He said: "Please convey my heartfelt condolences to all members of your family. I pray to the Almighty to give you the strength to bear this irreparable loss”.
