Denmark hit by "appalling" job losses in April

| @indiablooms | 22 Jun 2020, 11:35 am

Copenhegan/Xinhua: The equivalent of 73,000 full-time positions disappeared in Denmark this April, according to figures released by Statistics Denmark on Monday.

Adding the figures of March, a total of 93,000 full-time jobs disappeared in the Nordic country in just two months.

Chief economist in the business organization Danish Business Tore Stramer called the figures "plainly appalling reading."

The previous record was during the peak of the financial crisis in March and April in 2009, when employment fell by 13,500 people per month.

The latest job losses have been attributed to the shutdown of large parts of the Danish labor market since March 11 as part of efforts to contain the spread of COVID-19.

A gradual and controlled reopening of the Danish society has been underway since late May.

According to a forecast made by the Danish central bank on June 17, the country's gross domestic product (GDP) will fall by 4.1 percent in 2020.
