New Delhi/UNI: As many as 13,311 companies were registered in the month of December 2021 under the Companies Act, taking the total number of active companies in the country to 14,44,572, said the latest data by the government.

Out of the total companies registered across various categories, 811 were one-person companies (OPCs).

"A total of 13,311 companies, including 811 one-person companies (OPCs) were registered under the Companies Act, 2013 during December 2021 with authorized capital of Rs 3,164.19 crore," Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA)'s monthly bulletin said.

The MCA data showed Maharashtra topped the chart in new registrations of companies during December followed by Uttar Pradesh and Delhi.

As per economic activity-wise classification of new registrations, 'Business Services' ranked on the top with 3,508 companies registered in this group.

During December, 13,224 companies out of total new registrations were limited by shares and had a combined authorized capital of Rs 3,162.43 crores.

Vivek Jalan of Tax Connect Advisory Services LLP said that higher number of new registrations reflects growing economic activity on the ground.

"Many companies which were earlier directly exporting to India are now opening up their offices in the country and setting up local units due to new procurement rule. Since the new rule requires PSUs and government departments to take supplies from only those companies which have not less than 20 percent local content in their goods and services many foreign firms are opening up their offices in India," he added.

The Ministry data showed India had a total of 22,76,448 companies registered under Companies Act as on December 31, 2021. Out of these, 7,87,953 companies were closed while 7,014 companies were under liquidation process.

As per the official data, as many as 34,554 companies are in the process of being struck-off from the register and 2,355 companies obtained the 'dormant' status as per Section 455 of the Companies Act.

"There were 14,44,572 active companies, including 2,61,642 companies which were incorporated within the preceding 18 months (not due for Annual Statutory Filings)," said the MCA monthly bulletin.
