New Delhi/IBNS: Centre’s rice procurement is expected to be equal to last year's level of 592 lakh tonnes in the current 2022-23 marketing year ending September, despite an estimated decline in Kharif output, media reports said.

Food Corporation of India (FCI) Chairman and Managing Director Ashok K Meena said the procurement will reach the last year’s level of 592 lakh tonnes looking at paddy procurement, according to a report in the media

The government has set a procurement target of 600 lakh tonnes, but 426 lakh tonnes of rice have already been procured till January 26 of this year as against 410 lakh tonnes in the year-ago period, he said

Initial government estimates pegged the country’s rice output for the 2022-23 crop year (July-June) at 104.99 million tonnes.

The country had produced 111.76 million tonnes in the previous year.
