Railways to introduce OTP-based locking system in freight and parcel trains
New Delhi: In order to enhance security in the freight and parcel trains, the Indian Railways will soon incorporate an OTP-based digital locking system, media reports said.
The new system will provide better security against theft on board its freight and parcel trains, Indian Railways has said.
The locking system is already used by trucks where a GPS-enabled smart lock is provided allowing live tracking of the vehicle to reduce pilferage and thefts.
As per the officials, the lock can be closed and opened by using separate OTPs, which will be received by the railway personnel in each station where loading and unloading has to be done. The railways will seal the trains and ensure at every station that the seal is untouched.
This will prevent a string of problems while the train is moving towards the destination, officials said.
The OTP received at the personnel’s mobile will be verified and another OTP will be sent to the train driver’s mobile to unlock the lock.
The train’s movements will also be tracked and the location will be recorded.
If there are unsolicited attempts to open the door or there is an accident, an alert message will be sent to the official's mobile number.
