State Bank tops in PM Jan Dhan Yojana in West Bengal

Kolkata, Apr 22 (IBNS): The State Bank of India tops in the implementation of PM’s Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) in West Bengal.

 The leading Public Sector Bank opened 3632914 numbers of accounts in the state up to 25th February, 2015 in 2014-15. 

Of these, 2028140 are in rural areas and 1604774 are in urban areas. Shri Prashant Kumar, the Chief General Manager, SBI, Bengal Circle, said that 90 per cent of the new account holders have already been provided with Rupay Cards and the remaining 10 per cent will be completed by the end of this month. 

Though the accounts were opened as a zero-balance account, about Rs.200 crores has already been mopped up in these accounts so far, he added and opined that the unique project is a real example of financial inclusion.

Of these 11,79,771 are in rural areas and 6,41,108 are in the urban areas. 16,093 of those account holders have been provided with Rupay Card. 

UCO Bank, one of three nationalized banks having Headquarters here in Kolkata, have 4,70,729 numbers of Jan Dhan accounts up to 25.02.2015 in West Bengal. While 2,59,448 of them are in rural areas, the remaining 3,10,941 are in  urban areas. The next is Allahabad Bank, which, with its HQ in Kolkata, has 3,59,738 numbers of accounts to its credit in PMJDY in the state. Most of these, 2,86,168 are in the rural areas only. 

The Central Bank of India, has opened 3,33,932 Jan-Dhan accounts in the state till 25.02.2015 and most of them, 2,83,145 are in rural area. The remaining 50,878 accounts were opened in various urban settlements all over the state. The other major public sector bank in West Bengal, so far as the Jan Dhan Yojana are concerned, is the Bank of India which has 2,38,578 accounts. 


However, the numbers of Jan Dhan accounts for this bank are almost matching in rural and urban areas. While there are 1,21,905 accounts in the rural sector, the urban sector accounts for 1,16,673 numbers of Jan Dhan Accounts. 

It may be mentioned that over 12 crore 54 lakh bank accounts have already been opened under Jan Dhan Yojana in the country.
