Kolkata: Amara Raja Energy & Mobility (AREM) has signed a pact with Ather Energy to create and supply Nickel Manganese Cobalt (NMC) and Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) lithium-ion cells for electric two-wheeler batteries, a press release said.

These batteries will be manufactured locally at Amara Raja's upcoming Gigafactory in Divitipally, Telangana. With aspirations to become one of India's leading producers of Li-ion and advanced chemistry cells, Amara Raja plans to invest Rs 9,500 crore in the proposed 16 GWh gigafactory.

This partnership is focused on supporting the expansion of India's electric vehicle market and advancing the localization of EV technologies, Amara Raja said.

Tarun Mehta, co-founder and CEO at Ather Energy called this a significant step in promoting homegrown cell technology. "This will help us optimize costs and enable us to source lithium-ion cells tailored to Ather's specific requirements."

Amara Raja recently signed an agreement with Gotion-InoBat-Batteries (GIB) to collaborate on localizing global LFP technology for the production of lithium-ion cells tailored to Indian conditions.

"We are proud to partner with Ather and together we will focus on building market relevant solutions”, Vikramaditya Gourineni, ED, Amara Raja Energy & Mobility said.

Ather Energy has designed and built its battery packs in-house and, currently, has two manufacturing facilities in Hosur, Tamil Nadu, one dedicated to battery production and the other for vehicle assembly.

The company has recently announced its plans to open a third facility in Maharashtra which will allows Ather to get closer to more markets in the country.

Amara Raja is committed to providing products and solutions for e-mobility and energy storage markets and aims to be one of the largest manufacturers of Li-ion and other advanced chemistry cells in India.

Additionally, the company is all set to lead India’s R&D capabilities by establishing a state-of-the-art advanced research and innovation centre called ‘ePositive Energy Labs’ in Hyderabad, the company added.
