New Delhi/IBNS: Maruti Suzuki, India's largest passenger car maker, will recall 2,555 units of Alto K10 car due to a possible defect in Steering Gear Box, the company said in the statement.

“Maruti Suzuki India Limited (“Maruti Suzuki”) has announced to recall 2,555 Alto K10 vehicles wherein it is suspected that there is a possible defect in Steering Gear Box Assembly (“Part”),” according to the statement from Maruti Suzuki India Limited (MSIL), a subsidiary of Japanese carmaker Suzuki Motor Corporation.

MSIL has also claimed that the defect may impact vehicle steerability and cautioned customers to not to drive the vehicle until the defective part is changed.

“Out of abundant caution, customers of the affected vehicles are advised not to drive or use the vehicle till the Part is replaced,” the company said in the statement.

The Indian car manufacturer said it will provide free cost inspection and replacement for the defective part.

“Affected vehicle owners will be contacted by Maruti Suzuki authorized dealer workshops for inspection and replacement of the Part, free of cost,” the company said.

Maruti Suzuki, which has long been dominating the Indian passenger car market with over 50 percent market share, launched the new model of Alto K10 on August 18, 2022, with a tagline #IndiaChalPadi.

MSIL had remodelled the hatchback version available earlier and added new features in the new Alto K10 model, as per reports.

According to Mint, Maruti Suzuki sold 49,990 models in the sub segment of mini cars, which includes Alto and S-Presso models, in FY24.

The car maker had previously announced plans to recall 11,851 units of Baleno and 4,190 units of WagonR manufactured between July 30, 2019, and November 1, 2019, due to a possible defect in Fuel Pump Motor, which may lead to engine stalling or an engine starting issue, reports Mint.

Shares of Maruti Suzuki India were down on Thursday (Aug 8) morning after the car maker issued the recall notice, according to reports.

Maruti Suzuki, last week, reported a 4 percent dip in its total sales in July 2024 to 1.75 lakh units from 1.81 lakh vehicles sold in July last year (2023).

Passenger vehicles in the compact segment, which include cars like Baleno, Celerio, Dzire, Ignis, Swift and WagonR, saw the highest sales at 58,682 units in the month, as reported by the company.
