New Delhi: The Union Cabinet has sanctioned three railway projects with a total estimated cost of Rs 6,456 crores to improve logistical efficiency by connecting the unconnected areas, increasing the existing line capacity, and enhancing transportation networks, resulting in streamlined supply chains and accelerated economic growth.

The connectivity projects, approved by Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, are expected to be completed by 2028-29.

The proposed projects will generate direct employment for about 114 lakh man-days during construction.

These projects are the outcome of the PM-Gati Shakti National Master Plan for multi-modal connectivity, made possible through integrated planning.

The new line proposals will provide direct connectivity and improve mobility, providing enhanced efficiency and service reliability for Indian Railways.

The projects covering seven districts in four states—Odisha, Jharkhand, West Bengal and Chhattisgarh—will increase the existing network of Indian Railways by about 300 km.

With these projects 14 new stations will be constructed, providing enhanced connectivity to two Aspirational Districts—Nuapada and East Singhbum.

New line projects will connect to nearly 1,300 villages and about 11 lakh population.

The multi-tracking project will improve connectivity to 1,300 villages and about 19 lakh population.

These are essential routes for the transportation of commodities such as agricultural products, fertilizer, coal, iron ore, steel, cement, limestone, etc.

The capacity augmentation works will result in additional freight traffic of magnitude 45 MTPA (Million Tonnes Per Annum).

"As an environmentally friendly and energy-efficient mode of transportation, railways will contribute to achieving climate goals and reducing the country's logistics costs. This shift will also cut oil imports by 10 crore litres and lower CO2 emissions by 240 crore kg, equivalent to planting 9.7 crore trees," the railway ministry said.

The multi-tracking proposal will ease operations and reduce congestion, providing the much-required infrastructural development on the busiest sections across Indian Railways.
