Reliance Group partners with Bhutan for major solar and hydropower projects
Thimphu: Reliance Group announced a strategic collaboration with the government of Bhutan to develop large-scale solar and hydropower projects.
This is the largest foreign direct investment by a private company in Bhutan’s renewable energy sector.
In partnership with Druk Holding and Investments Ltd, the government of Bhutan's commercial arm, Reliance Group, led by Anil Ambani, will jointly develop 500 MW of solar and 770 MW of hydropower capacity in the country.
According to a press release, the 500-MW solar plant will be located in Bhutan's Gelephu Mindfulness City and will be completed in two phases of 250 MW each over the next two years.
Once operational, it will be the largest solar installation in Bhutan, generating clean, renewable energy to support the country's climate goals.
Reliance Power Ltd. and Druk Holding will co-develop the 770-MW Chamkharchhu-1 Hydro Project, which is classified as a run-of-the-river project under a concession model aligned with Bhutan’s policies.
“The partnership between Reliance Group and Druk Holding will focus on green energy generation through solar and hydropower projects, while exploring innovative green technologies. Reliance Group will collaborate with Bhutan’s state-owned enterprises to develop infrastructure that aligns with the country’s net-zero goals,” the release stated.
To further support renewable energy investment, Reliance Group also announced the launch of Reliance Enterprises, a new flagship company aimed at promoting sustainable energy solutions and modernizing distribution and metering systems across Bhutan.
Jointly promoted by Reliance Infrastructure Ltd. and Reliance Power, the company will play a key role in Bhutan's green energy future.
