Uber welcomes WB govt's move to fast track permit applications

Kolkata, May 25 (IBNS): App-based car service Uber has welcomed the move of the Transport Department of the West Bengal governmen, which has indicated that it intends to review all pending luxury taxi permit applications and release them during this financial year.

The department has begun reviewing over 9,000 luxury taxi permit applications they have received over the past couple of years and expects a conversion rate of 50 percent.

"By accelerating this process, the department will enable thousands of potential micro-entrepreneurs to kick-start their entrepreneurial journey, through the ferrying of goods or people as the case may be," a statement by Uber claimed.

Coming in the wake of a growing demand for app cabs in Kolkata, the move is expected to significantly improve availability of app cabs in the city as well as ease dynamic pricing differentials during rush hour based heavy demand situations, it added.

Commenting on this development, Pradeep Parameswaran, Head, Central Operations, Uber India, stated, “The decision to fast track pending permit applications reflects the pro-business and pro-consumer attitude of the West Bengal government. We are appreciative of the govt’s efforts in promoting enterprise and are enthused by the economic opportunities that this move can create in the coming time.”
