Uber loses licence to operate in London

London, Sept 22 (IBNS): In a major blow for app based taxi service provider Uber, the company has lost its licence to operate in London city of the UK.

The final day of licence for Uber to operate in the city in Sept 30.

In a statement, Transport for London (TfL) on Friday said it: "Informed Uber London Limited that it will not be issued with a private hire operator licence after expiry of its current licence on 30 September. TfL's regulation of London's taxi and private hire trades is designed to ensure passenger safety. Private hire operators must meet rigorous regulations, and demonstrate to TfL that they do so, in order to operate. TfL must also be satisfied that an operator is fit and proper to hold a licence."

"TfL has concluded that Uber London Limited is not fit and proper to hold a private hire operator licence," it said.

The statement further said: "TfL considers that Uber's approach and conduct demonstrate a lack of corporate responsibility in relation to a number of issues which have potential public safety and security implications."

London Mayor Sadiq Khan has backed the decision taken against Uber.

"I fully support TfL's decision- it would be wrong if TFl continued to licence Uber if there i any way that this could pose a threat to Londoner's safety and security."

Uber has not issued their remark on the issue so far.
