Uber partners with Ministry of Road Transport and Highways to raise safety awareness

Kolkata, Feb 4 (IBNS): Uber, an on-demand ride-sharing company, marked the 30th National Road Safety Week by reiterating its commitment to the cause and launching a comic series drafted by the authors of Amar Chitra Katha Media and Tinkle Comics to reach young audiences in India.

The comic series was launched by Shri Nitin Gadkari, Hon'ble Minister for Road Transport & Highways.

Speaking on the occasion, Nitin Gadkari, Hon'ble Minister for Road Transport & Highways pointed out, “Road safety is a key priority for the government and we are committed to reducing fatal road accidents by 50 percent by 2020. We have taken to new and unique ways of reaching out to audiences to build a stronger connection with them. Road safety is an initiative that needs calls for action from all stakeholders of society like policymakers, civic authorities, companies such as Uber and commuters in general."

Reinforcing Uber’s commitment towards road safety awareness, Chand Tulal Mazumdar, Acting Head of Public Policy & Government Relations, Uber India said, “We are proud to be a part of the Ministry’s effort to dramatically reduce road accidents and fatalities on Indian roads, which result in nearly 500,000 accidents annually. Safety is a shared responsibility and this partnership takes us a step closer to our goal. We keep looking for innovative and interesting ways with which to reach our audiences. We believe that spreading awareness among youth empowers them to make better, safer choices and helps them to play an enabling role in making our roads safer.”

India accounts for 12.5% of global road accidents, with 150,000 fatal accidents annually. It, therefore, becomes imperative to spread awareness about driving under the influence of alcohol.

The comic series launched by Uber not only stresses the consequences of drinking under the influence but also brings to light the ill-effects of riding without helmets and informs Indian youth about Good Samaritan Law. Uber believes that safety is a shared responsibility for which Uber, riders, driver partners and law enforcement authorities have to work hand-in-hand in order to produce positive results.
