Amazon and HPCL collaborate to increase Low Carbon Fuel adoption

New Delhi: Amazon India said on Monday that it has entered into an initial agreement with state-owned Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd (HPCL) to drive the development and adoption of Low Carbon Fuels (LCFs) for long-haul transport in India.

Through this collaboration, Amazon and HPCL will conduct a pilot to test these fuels in Amazon’s long-haul transport vehicles and explore the potential for establishing fuelling hubs and mobile refuelling stations to facilitate LCF access, Amazon India stated.

According to Amazon India, this partnership is a significant step toward reducing carbon emissions in transportation and aligns with Amazon's global commitment to achieving net-zero carbon operations by 2040, while also supporting India’s national net-zero carbon goal by 2070.

"Biofuels are key to India’s energy transition and are set to contribute to jobs and economic growth. Amazon's collaboration with HPCL is a step toward empowering this transformational shift.

"In line with The Climate Pledge's global goal to reach net-zero carbon by 2040, accelerating fuel alternatives in our transportation network reinforces our commitment to India’s energy ambitions and is helping our mission to reduce emissions," said Abhinav Singh, vice president for operations at Amazon India.

Amazon India also mentioned that the two companies will work with government agencies and industry think tanks to support policies that encourage LCF scaling in the country.

The company further noted that, under this partnership, agricultural and industrial waste will be repurposed for fuel production in Visakhapatnam and Bahadurgarh, with plans to develop fuelling hubs and mobile refuelling stations across India.

Additionally, the companies will advocate for low-carbon fuels through policy support and research initiatives.

"We are committed to developing and scaling sustainable fuel solutions that benefit our country, the industry, and the environment.

This collaboration marks a pivotal step toward decarbonising long-haul transportation and aligns with our vision of supporting India’s long-term low-carbon development strategy," HPCL stated.
