Mumbai/IBNS: Falguni Nayar, the founder of beauty startup Nykaa, on Wednesday became the richest self-made female billionaire in India, rising to the ranks of the world's wealthiest, according to Bloomberg Billionaires Index.

Nayar, who owns about half of the firm, is now worth about $6.5 billion.

She achieved the feat after Nykaa's shares surged about 89 percent when it started trading on Wednesday.

Nykaa's parent company FSN E-Commerce Ventures is the first woman-led unicorn to trade in the stock market.

Nayar, who had earlier led a top investment bank, founded Nykaa in 2012 at the age of 50.

Over the years, Nykaa grew into the top online beauty retailer, endorsed by leading Bollywood celebrities.

Derived from the Sanskrit word ‘Nayaka’ meaning actress or one in the spotlight, Nykaa says it is all about celebrating the star in each woman, and being her confidante and companion as she embarks on her own journey to discover her unique identity and personal style.
