BIS raids Amazon, Flipkart warehouses, seizes 3,500+ uncertified products
New Delhi: The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has launched a nationwide crackdown on uncertified products, conducting search and seizure operations at Amazon and Flipkart warehouses. Thousands of non-compliant items were confiscated during the raids.
Major seizures from e-commerce warehouses
BIS officials seized over 3,500 products, including geysers, food mixers, and other electrical appliances worth nearly ₹70 lakh, from an Amazon warehouse in Delhi.
Many of these products either lacked ISI certification or displayed counterfeit marks.
A separate raid at a Flipkart subsidiary in Delhi uncovered sports footwear worth ₹6 lakh that did not meet mandatory certification standards.
Ongoing investigations
The recent seizures follow similar raids in Hyderabad weeks earlier, where BIS officials confiscated over 2,700 uncertified items, including smartwatches, electric water heaters, and CCTV cameras, valued at more than ₹50 lakh.
Warnings to other e-commerce platforms
BIS has also issued notices to Meesho, Myntra, and BigBasket, instructing them to ensure that only BIS-certified products are sold on their platforms.
Government’s stance on e-commerce compliance
In December 2024, Consumer Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi stressed that consumer trust is essential for the growth of India’s e-commerce sector. He reiterated that online retailers must ensure accurate product descriptions and adhere to certification norms.
Legal consequences
Under Section 17 of the BIS Act, 2016, companies found violating certification requirements could face a minimum penalty of ₹2 lakh.
