Kolkata: State-run Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL), a premier energy company in India, has teamed up with Refroid Technologies to introduce India’s first indigenous liquid coolant specifically formulated for next-generation AI-driven and sovereign data centers.

"Utilizing its knowledge in advanced materials and energy solutions, BPCL aspires to establish a new industry standard by implementing the coolant in its own data centers, showcasing its efficiency and sustainability advantages," the company said.

“BPCL is honoured to take the lead in implementing and advancing this pioneering initiative,” said Shubhankar Sen, Executive Director, BPCL.

“This indigenous coolant represents a step forward in India’s energy independence and sustainability journey. We are proud to contribute to a solution that aligns with global environmental goals, supports AI and sovereign data initiatives, and strengthens India’s position as a technology leader.”

Refroid Technologies collaborated closely with BPCL’s research and development team to design a high-performance, energy-efficient liquid coolant specifically aligned with India’s distinct environmental characteristics.

“We are immensely proud to launch this innovative liquid coolant in partnership with BPCL,” said Satya Bhavaraju, CEO, Refroid Technologies.

“This breakthrough is a testament to India’s capability to lead in high-tech innovations while addressing global energy efficiency and carbon neutrality challenges. By leveraging this technology, data centres, including those supporting AI workloads and sovereign data, can significantly reduce operational costs and their environmental footprint.”

The indigenous liquid coolant offers several key advantages that enhance the performance and sustainability of data centers. It boosts energy efficiency by lowering the Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE), making data centers more economical and environmentally friendly.

With enhanced power density, it enables data centers to house more computing power per rack compared to traditional air-cooled systems.

Tailored specifically for Indian conditions, the coolant is engineered to perform effectively across a range of diverse climate scenarios.

This contributes to a reduced carbon footprint, supporting India's broader sustainability and clean energy goals.

Additionally, the coolant facilitates AI-ready and secure data centers, promoting high-performance AI operations and strengthening sovereign data infrastructure.

Manufactured entirely in India, it aligns with and supports the Make in India initiative, furthering the country's technological self-reliance.
