Gadkari urges SCO members to collaborate on R&D for road transport challenges

New Delhi/IBNS: SCO Transport Ministers can send a collective message affirming their determination to solve the contemporary challenges of the transport sector to build a collaborative ecosystem in the SCO regions, Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari said as he chaired the 10th SCO Transport Ministers meeting in New Delhi on Friday.

Chaired by India this year, SCO currently comprises eight member states which are India, China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Pakistan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan.

In today's meeting, all the member states supported the “Concept of cooperation of the SCO Member States to decarbonize transport, promote digital transformation and innovative technologies to achieve greater efficiency and sustainability".

A Special Working Group has been established to promote collaboration among member states of the SCO in the field of transportation.

This group will facilitate meetings to share knowledge and best practices related to reducing carbon emissions in transportation, promoting digital transformation, and implementing innovative technologies for more sustainable and efficient transport.

India has identified “Green Growth” as a key area for reducing the carbon intensity of the economy, including the promotion of green mobility during ‘Amrit Kaal’—the 25-year period to the completion of 100 years of India’s Independence during which it aims to improve the lives of its citizens, lessen the divide in development between villages and cities, reduce the government's interference in people's lives, and welcome the latest technology.

The Union Minister said we feel that a collaborative approach between the SCO member countries will help promote sustainable transport development, lower carbon emissions to enhance the quality of life, and improve the efficiency of transport systems within the SCO regions.

“This is also reflected in India’s commitment to achieving the target of net zero emissions by 2070 under the fivefold strategy called “Panchamrita” which was announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at COP26 in Glasgow in 2021,” he said.

The Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) is an intergovernmental organization founded in Shanghai on 15 June 2001
