Growth will be lower because of demonetisation: Chidambaram

New Delhi, Jan 7 (IBNS): Congress leader P Chidambaram on Saturday attacked the Centre over the note ban issue and said the move will lower India's growth.

"1/2) First the RBI, now CSO have forecast lower GDP growth. Govt's claims and boasts exposed," Chidambaram tweeted.

The former Union Finance Minister said, "(2/2) Growth will be even lower because of demonetisation. 1% reduction means loss of Rs 150000 crore."

The Centre on Nov 8 banned old Rs 500 and Rs. 1000 currency notes.

The Indian government on Friday said the country's Gross Domestic Product is estimated to stand at 7.1 per cent as compared to the growth rate of 7.6 per cent in 2015-16.

"Real GDP or Gross Domestic Product (GDP) at constant (2011-12) prices in the year   2016-17 is likely to attain a level of  `121.55 lakh crore, as against the Provisional Estimate of GDP for the year 2015-16 of `113.50 lakh crore, released on 31st May 2016," read a government statement.
