Kolkata/IBNS: Hindustan Copper Limited and the Indian Institute of Technology (Indian School of Mines), Dhanbad signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for collaborative and sponsored research projects in Kolkata.

Presently, the majority of ore production comes through underground mode only and the level of ore production is hovering around four million tonnes per annum.

The only copper miner in India, owning all the operating mining leases of copper ore in the nation, processes mined-out ore at its own ore beneficiation plants, and the Metals in Concentrate (MIC) is sold partially in the domestic market, and the rest in the international market.

HCL is looking at a three-fold enhancement of ore production capacity with various development activities in progress or planned in most of its mines.

Due to various issues such as complex geological, geotechnical and groundwater-related problems, the miner faces various technical and operational problems are during the process of production.

IIT-ISM, Dhanbad, will play a key role in solving the emerging geological, technical, environmental, sustainable and ore beneficiation issues for achieving the envisaged expansion programme of HCL.

HCL said the MoU will resolve its need for technical assistance, guidance and consultancy work from IIT-ISM for increasing copper ore production through modifying mining methods with modern technologies, productivity improvement and safety in mines and environmental clearance issues among others.
