Income generation and better life for the economically backward families are SPADE's basic goals
Kolkata, Jun 25 (IBNS): Children from nearly 50 economically backward families residing in a distant corner of Purulia, will be able to finally put away their lanterns and study under electric bulbs thanks to Calcutta Society for Professional Action in Development (better known as SPADE).
A non-government organisation (ngo), SPADE identified these families in a village called Burrabazar in Purulia and contacted the National Solar Scheme to get 50 solar domes installed in the huts that did not have electricity.
Formed in 1994, SPADE works in collaboration with various organisations for the betterment of the economically backward and marginalised sections of society.
Indrajit Dutt, Director, SPADE, said, “SPADE receives unstinted support from the government and corporates houses, without whom we would not have achieved our milestones.”
For example, with financial assistance from Tata Power Community Development Trust, SPADE has been running the Khanpur Aryan Swasahayak Dal where members from the local communities are given skill development training in agriculture and aquaculture.
According to SPADE, the members of the self-help group, who barely eked out an income from their agricultural plot of land and could not manage to send their children to school or enjoy basic amenities, now can afford to have a better life after the training. They even manage to save Rs 50 daily, the ngo said.
In Nabadwip (Nadia district, West Bengal), SPADE is facilitating a women-owned and -managed federation that not only implements various government beneficial schemes but also assists local women to improve their lives and livelihood.
Baidyanath Paul, Secretary, SPADE, said, "At SPADE, we want to create an environment where every woman would be able to utiliise her potential upto the maximum limit so as to build a society that is equitable and sustainable. SPADE strives to adopt a catalytic role in the process."
