NASSCOM firms up plan to stem talent migration from East
Kolkata, Apr 1 (IBNS) Acknowledging the huge talent pool in Eastern region, the NASSCOM has drawn upon a plan to stem migration from this part of the country in the IT sector.
"It’s not about Bengali’s creativity but rather about Bengal and the region’s rich analytical skill sets, creativity and inquisitive mindset which make sure that pass-outs from this region are well accepted in various parts of India and sons of this soil are in very responsible leadership positions," a top NASSCOM official told IBNS in an interview here.
"The flare for excellent communications, ability to take up leadership roles along with Team mindset give a lot of advantage to freshers here. But it is very important to channelize that energy in a productive fashion and see that most of them gets employment in East itself and need not venture outside," NASSCOM regional head Nirupam Chowdhury said here.
"With the right opportunities, this is a continuous process and we all have a tough task in hand. With the support from Industry leaders here, it is possible to make things better than what is even there presently in terms of employability," the official added.
Stating there are success cases in East already, he referred to NASSCOM’s incubator (NASSCOM 10K – Start-up Warehouse) to allow selected start-ups to come and work for 6 months and provide lot of support like mentorship, finding assistance, enterprise connects and accelerator support.
"Industry leaders, investors and government are part of steering committee and they play the most crucial role. Many freshers right out of colleges have also applied along with their team to pursue their dream as an entrepreneur and there are success cases in East aplenty already. An estimated 50 per cent of the start-ups who have graduated from NASSCOM incubator have also got funded, which is an excellent statistics to boost the ecosystem here," Chowdhury said.
"This year with inclusion of Dewang Mehta awards in the e-summit event, we are encouraging each student to aspire to work hard to earn that award for recognition. Industry has high demand for proper skills for the IT Sector. NASSCOM has been doing a lot of efforts to spread the need for all round education along with business skills for even freshers so that they absorbed better in the Industry. This is an effort which Academia is appreciating and we are doing sessions in various campuses throughout the year, it’s not just one stray event," he said.
Basic objective is to increase employability and also to increase awareness of aspiring entrepreneurs about the challenges and nuances of starting one’s own business.
Through NASSCOM Apprenticeship Program, the organisation is doing pilots with few engineering colleges in the region where they will do summer internships up to one year before they pass out and join Industry. This is a huge impetus to better employability, he added.
