Srinagar: Department of Soil and Water Conservation District Budgam on Thursday held a cleanliness drive in Hokarsar wetland here.

The campaign was a part of the Azaadi Ka Amrit Mahatsav.

The drive was held in collaboration with the district administration, Wildlife Department and Budgam Municipality also participated in the event.

“The aim of the cleanliness drive is to spread the message that wetlands are an important part of our environment and need to be preserved,” said Junaif Nazir, district officer Department of Soil and Water Conservation Budgam.

“Wetlands play a critical role in maintaining many natural cycles and supporting a wide range of biodiversity. They serve as a natural sponge against flooding and drought, protect our coastlines and help fight climate change,” she said.

She added that Soil Conservation Department is committed to formulate and implement of site-specific schemes to conserve and manage soil and water resources.

She said that under the Azaadi Ka Amrit Mahatsav, today’s cleanliness drive was aimed to spread awareness among people and also to contribute to conservation of wetlands.

“We are taking up appropriate water conservation measures in and outside forest areas for water conservation, impounding of water wherever sites permit to increase ground water recharge and prevent flood,” said an official.

The Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav is an intensive, country-wide campaign which will focus on citizen participation, to be converted into a ‘Janandolan’, where small changes, at the local level, will add up to significant national gains.
