The town of Ukhrul in Manipur is set to implement waste collection cards for every household, aiming to foster a clean and eco-friendly environment. The unanimous decision was reached during a joint meeting led by Ukhrul's deputy commissioner, Kengoo Zuringla, at the DC conference hall.

The waste collection cards, to be issued by the Small Town Committee (STC) of the Autonomous District Council of Ukhrul, will incur a monthly fee of Rs 200, reported EastMojo.

Zuringla emphasized that the responsibility for waste management within each jurisdiction will be assigned to the respective chairman and secretary of the concerned locality.

To ensure effective waste segregation, households are required to separate various materials such as plastic, diapers, sanitary napkins, torn clothes, and expired medicines. The public is strongly urged to adhere to these guidelines in all localities.

To enforce proper waste disposal practices, it was decided during the meeting that individuals found disposing of waste in unauthorized locations such as roadsides, highways, and streams will face a fine of Rs 1,000, with appropriate legal action taken against offenders.

Furthermore, the STC, ADC, Ukhrul, will collect waste materials from 10 am to 11 am daily, excluding holidays, along the route from Kharasom junction to District Hospital in Hungpung.

In order to raise public awareness about effective waste management, strategically placed flex banners and displays will be deployed throughout the town. This decision comes in the wake of a two-month suspension of garbage collection by the Small Town Committee of the Ukhrul Autonomous District Council.

The suspension followed a request from locals in Lower Hungpung to relocate the open dumping site in Asso, Kazipphung. As an interim measure, the garbage will now be disposed of at a temporary dumping site on Kasomphung Old British Road, Hunphun, until a permanent location is identified.

The introduction of waste collection cards marks a significant stride in combating the garbage disposal problem in Ukhrul town.
