Torrential rains disrupt life in Delhi; IMD issues orange alert

New Delhi: Delhi has been experiencing continuous rainfall since last evening, causing traffic congestion and waterlogging in several areas.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had issued an orange alert for Thursday, which has now been extended to today.

This alert advises residents to prepare for potential power outages and significant disruptions to transport services, including rail, road, and air.

The rainfall has also brought down the temperature to around 21.4 degrees Celsius, which is four degrees below normal, according to the IMD.

The IMD issues weather alerts to inform the public about potentially severe weather conditions that could cause damage or disruption.

These alerts are color-coded, with yellow indicating moderate rainfall, orange for heavy to very heavy rain (alerting authorities to stay vigilant), and red for extremely heavy rainfall (urging immediate action).

Alerts are also issued during flood situations caused by rising water levels due to torrential rain.

According to the IMD, a depression over southwest Uttar Pradesh is causing the current rainfall in Delhi and nearby areas in the National Capital Region (NCR).

The IMD bulletin on Thursday evening stated that the depression was centered around 70 km east-northeast of Agra.

It is expected to move north-northeastwards and gradually weaken starting Friday, September 13.

Heavy rainfall is also expected in Uttarakhand due to this depression.
