Water birds census begins in Kashmir

Srinagar, Feb 17 (IBNS) Two-day census of waterbirds began on Tuesday in 23 wetlands of Kashmir valley, which hosts a million migratory birds each winter in addition to thousands of local species.

“This event is called the Asian water bird census which is part of a global water bird progarmme, International water bird census (IWC)
coordinated by Wetlands International Netherlands. The Department of Wildlife Protection is conducting the 'Asian Waterbird Census 2016' in the wetlands of the valley,” an official spokesman said

The programme saw participants including students, NGOs and Wildlife SOS, the spokesman said.

The spokesman added, “The exercise is conducted by Wildlife Warden Wetlands Division Kashmir and under the guidance of the Chief Wildlife Warden, and Regional Wildlife Warden, Kashmir. Prior to the exercise, an orientation session for the participants was held at Hokersar where all the participants were given first- hand knowledge of the methodology to be adopted.”

Chief Wildlife Warden, Deepak Khanna, said that department is organizing this event in the state in all most all the important wetlands which include Hokersar, Shallabugh, Wullar, Dal, Anchar, Haigam and Chattlum.
