Bengaluru: Residents team up to plant saplings

Bengaluru, June 12 (Just Earth News): With the thought and vision of a greener and more sustainable city, the residents of Ranka Colony Road, Bannerghatta Road here came together to plant saplings on Sunday.

More than 100 saplings were planted by the residents to spread the green message and contribute in their own little ways in facilitating the makeover of the city.

The drive witnessed participation from more than 500 residents of the society with enthusiasm, as residents from all age groups indefatigably toiled through Sunday morning to sow the seeds of future, including the ownership of adopting each sapling for the required nurture and care, truly a treat to watch! It was amazing to see the children taking the lead in maintaining their green belt & help beautify the city.

This is not the first green initiative of the residents of Ranka Colony road who had earlier conducted Swachh Bharat Abhiyan in the vicinity.

In a bid to consciously encourage everyone to inculcate environment friendly habits, the children of the colony also organised a flash mob. Clad in green, around 50 children grabbed the attention of the residents with their impressive performance.

The event received unstinted support from K Narayana Raju, Bilekahalli ward Corporator and M Satish Reddy, MLA, Bommanahalli Constituency who were also present during the drive and supported with saplings, labour to dig pits and tree guards. They also ensured that the tree planting area for this drive was sanitized from illegal waste and debris to create a green belt.

“Good old Bangalore had streets lined with trees on either side, a pleasant and nostalgic memory from our childhood. I would certainly love my child and the next generation to inherit a greener future they truly deserve. It is time we become sensitive towards our environment and its issues. Our job does not end with the plantation drive. This act of responsibility is the need of the hour as it is most important to protect our environment in order to protect ourselves and future generations” said Bhavya, a resident of the colony.

“We would like to extend our gratitude to M Satish Reddy, MLA, Bommanahalli Constituency and K Narayana Raju, Bilekahalli ward Corporator for gracing the occasion and encouraging the drive. The purpose behind conducting this plantation drive is many. While it helps keeping the colony green, it also acts as a platform for the residents to get-together for a good cause. It is to be noted that the mission can be fulfilled only when each one of us unite, support and work towards the common goal. This act should go beyond just one day volunteering. Residents of Ranka Colony road have been actively involved in waste segregation, usage of biogas plant, water conservation etc, said Chetan Mahindra, another resident of the colony.

The residents approached us with their idea of sapling drive and we were more than happy to accommodate and help them accordingly. It's always encouraging to interact with participating residents, eager to contribute ideas on development. Such acts by the residents display great concern for the environment and a responsible way to conserve the ecosystem. We cheer the citizens on this tremendous effort and wish them a healthy environment, said K Narayana Raju, Bilekahalli ward Corporator.
