Sydney, Feb 26 (IBNS): An earthquake measuring 7.5 on the Richter Scale hit Papua New Guinea’s Southern Highlands province early on Monday, as per the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) website.
The USGS said the earthquake was 35 km deep.
The epicentre of the quake was located 89 kilometers southwest of Porgera in the Pacific Island nation.
The quake was felt at 3.45 a.m. local time.
No casualty has been reported so far.
Asia Pacific Office of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) tweeted: " Papua New Guinea Red Cross is gearing up to assess people's needs after today's big 7.5M #earthquake as they have done after previous disasters, like this El Nino operation. #PNG ."
