Visakhapatnam, Dec 16 (IBNS): Cyclonic storm Phethai is "very likely" to intensify into a severe cyclonic storm and make landfall in Andhra Pradesh on Monday afternoon, the India Meteorological Department has said.
The storm, which was 380km southeast of Chennai on Sunday evening, is expected to cross the Andhra Pradesh coast around Kakinada on Sunday.
The Met says the storm is likely to weaken slightly before landfall and cross the coast as a cyclonic storm.
Extremely heavy rainfall is expected at isolated places in coastal Andhra Pradesh, and north Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry.
Heavy to very heavy rain is expected at several places in Odisha.
Gale wind speed reaching 80-90 kmph gusting to 100 kmph is very likely to prevail along and off central coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam district of Pondicherry coasts.
Sea conditions are very likely to become very rough to high along and off central Andhra Pradesh coast and Pondicherry coast.
The Met department has advised total suspension of fishing operations along the Andhra Pradesh coast.
