Kannur, Jun 5 (UNI) World Environment Day was observed at the Indian Naval Academy (INA), Ezhimala on Wednesday by planting 1,200 saplings at various locations within the academy campus.
INA Commandant Vice Admiral R B Pandit inaugurated the tree planting by the Naval community and school children, an INA statement said here.
The tree planting event marks the start of a continuous initiative that will culminate into a major afforestation drive targeting 30,000 sapling during the monsoon, which will enrich the biodiversity of the Academy.
The saplings planted comprise a wide variety including fruit bearing plants, indigenous trees, medicinal plants, herbal plants and decorative plants. This would enhance the green cover and help in preserving the 'pristine air quality' and rich flora inside the INA and its adjoining areas, the statement said.
A nature walk was also organised for students of Kendriya Vidyalaya on the occasion.
