Moscow/Sputnik/UNI: The number of people who have died from the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in the Chinese province of Hubei has gone up to 1,696, regional health authorities report, with 100 new deaths having occurred in the past 24 hours.

The total number of people infected with the virus in Hubei has crossed 58,180 according to the latest update from the Hubei health commission.

ver 6,630 people have recovered from the disease in Hubei Province, with over 1,000 people having recovered in the past 24 hours.

In comparison, only a week ago just 356 people had recovered for every 91 deaths.

The current coronavirus outbreak started in the city of Wuhan, the capital of Hubei Province, in December.

The new virus, initially called 2019-nCoV and later given the name COVID-19 by the World Health Organization (WHO) is thought to have originated at a "wet market" in Wuhan.

The virus was first thought to be transmitted only by means of direct contact with infected animals. It has since been confirmed that it can be passed from one person to another although it is still unclear how easily the infection, which can cause severe pneumonia, can spread among people.
