Fatality rate lowest: India less worried over Covid despite steady rise in positive cases
New Delhi/IBNS: The Indian Health Ministry on Tuesday sounded less worried over the pandemic Covid-19 as the fatality rate in the vast country of 1.3 billion people was among the lowest in the world despite a steady surge in positive Coronavirus cases even in the last week of lockdown 4.0.
India, which comprises 36 states and union territories, reported fresh 6,535 fresh Covid-19 cases in 24 hours between Monday and Tuesday mornings taking the tally to over 1,45,000.
As per the data provided by Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, 1,45,380 people including 60,491 cured/discharged and 4,167 deceased have been infected with the pandemic virus.
During a regular bulletin, Lav Agarwal, the joint secretary of India's Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, on Tuesday said, "Our Covid-19 case fatality rate (death rate among confirmed cases) was 3.30% on Apr 15, it has now come down to 2.87%, which is amongst the lowest in the world."
"Compared to 69.9 Covid-19 cases per lakh population for the world as a whole, 10.7 cases per lakh population have been reported in India. This is due to the lockdown and our containment efforts," he added.
Agarwal stated India's fatality rate is 2.87% at a time the world's mortality rate is 6.45%, much higher than the Asian country.
While 4.4 deaths per lakh population were reported worldwide, India has registered 0.3% deaths per lakh population, added the joint secretary.
In a similar tune, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Monday said, "We have analysed the situation after giving relaxations in lockdown. We came to know that the situation is under control. There is nothing to worry if Coronavirus patients continue to get cured. Our intention is to stop the deaths."
Kejriwal was one of the first CMs to say that people would now have to live with the virus which has no cure or vaccine yet.
The recovery rate has gone up from 7.10% on Mar 25 to 41.61% on May 26, said Agarwal.
Maharashtra, the worst affected state, has reported more than 50 per cent of India's total Covid cases.
The western state has reported 52,667 cases including 15,786 cured/discharged and 1,695 deceased.
Maharashtra is followed by the southern state of Tamil Nadu (17,082), Gujarat (14,460) and Delhi (14,053) in terms of the infected numbers.
India has already entered into the last week of the fourth phase of nationwide lockdown which is due to end on Jun 1.
Even before the expiry of the lockdown 4.0, Himachal Pradesh on Monday extended the shutdown till Jun 30.
The hill state has reported 223 cases so far.
In a step towards bringing normalcy in the country, the Indian government on Monday resumed domestic passenger flight operations, which was suspended even before the beginning of the lockdown in March, but lots of airlines were also cancelled in Delhi creating more confusion for the passengers.
