New Delhi/IBNS: Reporting more than 8,000 new cases in the last 24 hours, India on Tuesday ranked the seventh worst Covid-19-affected country in the world.

As per both Indian Health Ministry's data and John Hopkins University & Medicine, the vast country of 1.3 billion people has reported 8,171 new cases between Monday and Tuesday mornings, taking the Covid tally to 1,98,706.

Out of the total infected patients, little less than 50 per cent (95,527 people) have been discharged or cured while 5,598 people have lost their lives due to the contagion.

India, which comprises 36 states and union territories, is behind Italy that has reported 2,33,197 cases so far.

The worst affected country still remains the United States with 18,11,357 cases followed by Brazil, Russia, United Kingdom and Spain.

Despite racing to the seventh spot in terms of the infected cases, India ranks 13th if the mortality rate is considered.

The country which ranks first in terms of mortality rate is once again the US.

Unlock 1

In a bid to set the economy of the country rolling, the central government on Saturday amid the massive surge in Covid-19 cases limited the lockdown to only containment zones (where positive cases are reported) till Jun 30.

The government has allowed the opening up major segments of socio-economic life- religious places, hotels, restaurants, hospitality services, shopping malls- outside the containment zones from Jun 8 in the lockdown 5.0.

On the first day of Unlock 1.0, hustle-bustle was noticed in major metropolitan cities with crowd thronging on streets either to reach their offices or for catching a bus after over two months of a marathon lockdown.
