Amethi, Uttar Pradesh, Jan 1 (IBNS) : In a massive seizure rarely known to have been made anywhere in India, police have rescued more than 6,000 turtles, stuffed in sacks for smuggling, after a raid in a house in Uttar Pradesh's Amethi, NDTV reported.

One person has been arrested in connection with the seizure from the house in Gauriganj town.

The raid was  conducted by UP Police Special Task Force on Tuesday,

"We have recovered such a huge amount of turtles from one single location. We are investigating this further and looking at the involvement of more people, especially smuggling rings," the NDTV report quoted  Arvind Chaturvedi, a senior police officer, as saying.

In India turtles are found all along the gangetic belt and are in high demand for consumption and production of some medicines in the entire south and south-east Asia.

According to the report, the  UP forest department has issued a statewide alert. The state government says more raids will be conducted in the coming days to crack down on the smuggling of turtle.
