Elephant, who strayed into Bengal's village, dies after being attacked with spike rods, fireballs

Kolkata/IBNS: An elephant reportedly died after it was attacked by 'hulla' groups in West Bengal's Jhargram who wanted to drive it out of the area.

The incident was flagged by conservationist Prerna Singh Bindra in a post on X.

'Hulla' groups, as they are locally called, are tasked with chasing elephants away from farmlands and human settlements.

As seen in the video, this group used spiked iron rods with a burning flame in a bid to drive away the elephant that had wandered into the village.

This practice is banned under the law but was used in this case, which eventually led to the death of the female elephant, Bindra alleged.

She also claimed that the 'hulla' group was working with the full knowledge of the forest department.

Another video shared by Bindra shows one of the elephants struck with a burning rod. The creature then falls to the ground.

In a similar case back in 2020, a pregnant elephant in Kerala died after she ate a pineapple full of firecrackers offered to her by some locals.

The wild elephant had left the forest and traversed into a nearby village in search of food. As she walked down the streets, she was offered the pineapple full of crackers by locals.
