Elon Musk's Starlink broadband service to cover most of the earth by 2022

New York/IBNS : Elon Musk has confirmed a speed boost of around 300mbps and latency reduction to around 20ms of Starlink satellite broadband service which is being tested by his company SpaceX.

In a Twitter response to a user in the United States who has received the Starlink broadband kit and shared a screenshot of the broadband speed reaching up to only 130mbps Musk tweeted :"Speed will double to ~300Mb/s & latency will drop to ~20ms later this year."

In the beta testing phase, Starlink offered users a broadband speed between 50mbps and 150mbps with latency reduction ranging between 40ms and 20ms depending on the location.

According to media reports, SpaceX has said Starlink will cover most of the earth by the end of this year which means the service could be expanded to India though the company has not announced a roadmap for this.

"Most of Earth by end of year, all by next year, then it’s about densifying coverage. Important to note that cellular will always have the advantage in dense urban areas. Satellites are best for low to medium population density areas," tweeted Musk.

SpaceX has already submitted a recommendation to Telecom Authority of India (TRAI) in 2020 for offering satellite broadband service in India.

Musk's SpaceX plans to provide internet connectivity to rural areas where traditional services cannot reach due to high cost and low subscription.

So far the company has had a favourable run with  $900 million in funding under FCC programs to meet its target of providing internet connectivity to rural areas as well, stated a Hindustan Times report, adding that the company's website shows that 10,000 people have already pre-booked the service.
